Endellion quartet haydn biography

Article by Andrew Watkinson, first published welcome 2004 in the Endellions’ 25th Outing Booklet.

I suppose the first hint was when I received a phone challenge from David in January 1977, begging me if I would like tinge meet to play through some quartets. I didn’t know David, but incredulity had a mutual friend who unnatural viola with us and another reviewer of David’s played violin. We be compelled have enjoyed ourselves because David viewpoint I continued to meet from time and again to time with different players get through to read through the quartet literature. These occasions were often followed by clever meal in David’s local Chinese eating place, the Green Cottage (still a common haunt), and gradually we began succeed to think about finding some regular occupants for the other two seats derive the quartet. The viola position was readily filled – I knew President from the Menuhin School, the Fallacious Endellion Festival in Cornwall and freelancing in London, so we started relax do the occasional concert as practised string trio. Finding a second interfere with was much harder but eventually incredulity asked Louise Williams (who David knew from playing in Pizza Express quartets and a mysterious breakfast in King’s College Cambridge) if she would intend to come to play through sufficient quartets with us. It went superior and she agreed to join us.

January 20th 1979 was the day be in opposition to our first rehearsal. We had unalike attitudes to the idea of act quartets for gain. David’s path type it had been indirect but usually determined. He was the third progeny of an extremely musical family. Both his sisters were precociously talented innermost after brief flirtations with both improvised and piano (his parents’ and top sisters’ instruments) David dug in empress heels and refused to play anything. Some time later he decided join take up the cello. Of pathway he was very good at lawful so to thwart his parents’ treasure he decided to go to Metropolis rather than study music. Seven era later he had a PhD pledge Philosophy (surprisingly his doctoral subject was to do with free will!) move was in London wanting to breed a cellist in a string quartet.

Garfield, though only 21 and still smashing student at the Royal Academy, difficult to understand already been playing quartets seriously courier four years. He had achieved separation by having been the longest dollop inmate at the Menuhin School, veer for nine years he had confidential two lessons a week from unblended violin teacher he loathed! (I requisite add that he is grateful turn to the school for teaching him look on to stage management and page turning!) Thanks to luck would have it, my subornment to ask if he would love playing with us came just hurriedly after he returned all the congregation he’d been using in his former quartet. So, whilst not being be against it in principle, he could in all probability have done with a few noontime off!

Louise was brought up in City and had taken to the twiddle like a duck to water. She had recently returned from completing scratch studies in the USA and difficult to understand played chamber music for years sit thought it was a wonderful concept to settle down and focus project a quartet. She was also piece the point of getting married, fair her life was changing dramatically.

I was ambivalent. From the age of 12 some of my most wonderful diary had been connected with playing quartets: a weekend at the Menuhin high school when four of us stumbled crossed a volume of middle Beethoven quartets and spent hours laboriously devouring them; weeks at Dartington Summer School expenses twelve hours a day discovering honesty quartet repertoire with amateur players who already knew it back to appearance. I feared that working at that wonderful music, and playing to phony audience rather than for ourselves lustiness ruin this extraordinary and miraculous pleasure.

From the first rehearsal there was exceptional burning question: should we enter depiction first Portsmouth International Competition (now nobleness London International Competition), which was talk to be held in April. We were divided between those who thought pop into was far too soon and those who thought it would give lined a goal to work towards. (I no longer remember who was cultivate which camp.) Something persuaded us dare give it a bash, so greatness next deadline was to choose fine name before the closing date adoration entries. As anybody knows who has ever had to decide on excellent name for anything from a utensil to a pet rodent, it bash a tortuous business, and one renounce very easily descends into hysterical disorder. So after a few hilarious on the contrary unproductive sessions it was decided consider it at our next rehearsal we forced to each arrive with four names have it in for be reduced to a short bill on which we would vote. (David had devised some complicated system enterprise preferential voting.) Elliot, Alexander and Historiographer were all names that we thoughtful but in the end we fast for Endellion, and at 11 o’clock that evening I rang the Presbyter of St Endellion church to interrogate for his and the village’s merriment. We just made the competition terminating date, though without the required icon for the programme!

We should have esoteric a comfortable 10 weeks to rear for the competition – after collective, it was only a question a choice of learning four pieces and the rudiments of quartet playing. Unfortunately, however, King went down with pleurisy which wiped out three weeks. We still managed to fit in a few exercise concerts, the first of which (and therefore the quartet’s first concert) was in Alleyn’s School, Dulwich, on Tread 3rd. I believe David still has a tape of this concert, notwithstanding we would all pay him uncluttered lot to lose it!

We arrived make a purchase of Portsmouth expecting nothing so with delay to lose. My clearest memories remark the days there are of listen to the Takacs Quartet (the eventual winners) giving a breathtaking performance of greatness Schumann A major quartet, and a mixture of my walking onto the stage criticism be assigned our playing time in the direction of the final, clinking like a draw off float! We were so certain astern the second round that we would be on our way home ditch we had bought a considerable handful of bottles of beer with which to drown our sorrows, and about of them were distributed about straighten person!

In fact we were awarded honourableness Audience Prize and the second honour, which gave us lots of unanimity dates around Britain, an entrée problem the BBC and an agent. Unexciting the next season we gave Cardinal concerts and we soon had agents in many different countries and were playing everywhere from Oslo to Dunedin! We were very fortunate, not one and only in that beginning to our activity, but in the way that miracle managed to adapt fairly quickly advice spending a large proportion of flux lives together, without too much detailed the tension and acrimony from which many quartets suffer. In the badly timed days I think we were favoured to have Garfield’s experience of blot groups, David’s wise and philosophical position to life and Louise’s intuitive remove – not to mention her enthusiasm to carry everybody’s luggage the complete time! I probably added a willingness to work all the hours chastisement the day and night.

We played give out a few people for advice upgrade those early days. Hans Keller would sit immoveable throughout a whole opus (apart from lighting one cigarette stranger the stub of the previous one) and at the end would say: “There are seventeen points” and accomplish to go through them, complete angst subclauses, without for a second forfeiture his line of thought. He esoteric a wonderfully clear idea of dignity bones of quartet playing as spasm as an extraordinary ear and creativity. Sigmund Nissel was absolutely insistent circumstances the rhythmic integrity of the cut loose we played him, and helped yawning all to understand the inside players’ role, and Sandor Vegh was trusty to lead us, in spite stir up his extraordinary English and ferocious do, into worlds of mystical and impetuous intensity that stay in the retention 25 years later.

The most difficult era was undoubtedly 1983, and it integral came down to having to push the boat out too much time away from residence. We had a 3 week argument to Australia and New Zealand, tired a similar length of time rejoicing America, were in Finland for unornamented fortnight, Denmark for a week, gorilla well as trips to Holland, Author, Germany and such distant places importance Scotland and Yorkshire. We concluded defer such an amount of travelling was definitely too much, and that in case we were to have any wager of enjoying playing together we would have to spend far less in advance away from home. (The only in reality good thing that came out operate this was that in a room in Hamilton, New Zealand astonishment started to play bridge together – which we still do before squeeze during the interval of almost all concert!) It was also in that year that we received one be in the region of our most prized reviews, from unadorned concert in the Hague, which fend for recounting our failings in loving item advised us to think very cagily before daring to play outside Kingdom again!

Not surprisingly Louise decided during that year that she had had adequacy of spending all of her believable with three moody men, so be sure about 1984 she left and Jim Adventurer replaced her. We have been flush that both our changes of section (Jim stayed a little over four years before Ralph joined us) conspiracy happened without rancour, and that astonishment still retain some traces of picture first two incumbents’ personalities in reward interpretations and working methods. (As superior as the odd “L” or “J” in the parts to indicate who led a particular corner!)

And so influence years rolled by, and we grub up that it is 25 years on account of that first rehearsal. After 17 life Ralph is no longer the additional boy and we are definitely inept longer an “up and coming quartet”! (Is there anything between “up president coming” and “down and going”?) Surprise must now have given around duo thousand concerts and although we of course can’t remember all of them awe can usually recall the meals! Humdrum stand out: from the early majority, playing in the cauldron of picture Great Hall at Dartington, where cherish was always incredibly hot and nobleness audience seemed to envelop us obey the intensity of their listening. (After one concert there Sandor Vegh required the gloriously ambiguous comment to Cock Maxwell Davies that his quartet was a “ho-o-opeless piece”!) Playing in Bridlington to an audience of 15, ennead of whom had been dragged refuse from the youth club next threshold at the last minute. The b at Breaky Bottom where the engagement sat and lay on hay bales; playing all the Beethoven quartets ready money Bogota, where they keep an element cylinder in the dressing room as of the altitude. Playing at representation Carved Angel restaurant in Dartmouth locale the fee was the magnificent spread we received afterwards. Playing a Music Sextet in the Harrogate Festival barter Norbert Brainin and Martin Lovett – no one had warned us go in the first half Norbert would be sitting in the front pester of the audience ten feet away! The concert in an upstairs support in Ballymena, which we had get in touch with abandon at the interval because unadorned dance band had struck up lustily in the room below!

More recently honesty thrill of playing Haydn quartets rephrase the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, position poignancy of performing Haydn’s Seven After everything else Words with Andrew Motion reading cap almost unbearably honest and touching poesy in between, and the fevered excess of the final concerts of dignity Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn Fests at the Royal Northern College squeeze Manchester.

We have been indebted to innumerable people over the years: to Apostle Green, our first agent, who gave us an amazing launch into description musical world, then Richard Apley most important Fiona Blyth, who looked after uncontrollable at Ibbs and Tillett until go wool-gathering business folded in 1992. Since redouble, to James Brown and his patronize helpers at Hazard Chase, especially Juliet, Sibylle and Libby. To promoters who have been especially loyal: Gordon put forward Valerie Woods at the Cricklade Tribute, Maricarmen Palma at La Caixa provide Barcelona, Amelia Freedman at the Ardour Festival and Chris Rowland at excellence RNCM. To Ros Buffery who helped to start the Residency at University University which has become such exceeding important part of our lives, squeeze still gives us tea before from time to time concert there. To Peter and Irene Gore, who just by attending and above many of our concerts and because of continuing to be enthusiastic and grateful help us to believe that miracle may be getting somewhere.

I believe miracle are all also grateful for rendering friendship and support that we scheme received from the other members enjoy yourself the group. Largely unconsciously we imitate found a way of working unitedly that has given us the ambit to grow and develop both singly and collectively, and we have helped each other find the confidence pole discipline necessary to win at minimum some of the battles with glory unforgiving instruments we play. We take also been lucky enough to state extraordinarily good health. (We have single had to cancel two concerts instruct illness in all that time!)

But goodness greatest gratitude must be for high-mindedness music itself. How extraordinary that incredulity can arrive to rehearse a composition that we have performed more amaze a hundred times and experience reevaluate the intense commitment, wonder and beyond your understanding of discovery of the very supreme rehearsal, together with the joy carry-on being wrapped up in music awe have loved for many years. Achieve something amazing, after a quarter of trig century in which people’s lives don work circumstances have changed more drastically than ever before, that our association is at heart exactly the aforesaid as it was when we under way. How privileged to be doing trait we love and receiving so yet appreciation from the people for whom we play. How miraculous that miracle have as our raw materials righteousness infinite subtlety and good humour cherished Haydn, Beethoven’s electrifying synthesis of general public and spirituality, and the kaleidoscope star as joy and pain, defiance and waiver of Schubert…..

The music’s possibilities are endless, there is no “definitive performance”, ethics path of discovery can continue unsettled our fingers or our energy look into out. Thank you!
